Dermatology Training in Ramathibodi Hospital

  • Ramathibodi Hospital is a teaching hospital in the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital of Mahidol University located in Bangkok, Thailand. The Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine is responsible for all the dermatology training programs of the faculty. The division was found in 1968 together with the hospital. From the beginning, we had only one  training program for residents in dermatology that is illegible for Thai board of dermatology examination by The Thai Medical Council. In 1998 we added a teaching program called graduated diploma for dermatology. Apart from these, we also provide subspecialty fellowship training such as fellowship in dermatological surgery, dermatological laser surgery and phototherapy.  The details for each program are as following

Brief History of Residency training program

  • Before 1993, residency training program approved byThai Medical Council was a 3-year program. In order to limit the number of dermatology training, the council changed the program to 5-year program from 1993. Those who want to be a board certified dermatologist have to complete 3 year training in internal medicine before take another 2 years in dermatology. The result was mark decreased in the number of resident in the training centers. So most of the training center have to solve the problem by continued training in 3-year program without the approval of Thai Medical Council. This informal training was called fellow in dermatology program and became popular for Thai medical graduate who do not need the certified board as they are going to be a private dermatologist. In 1996 Thai Medical Council revised the 5-year program back to 3-year program. In 1998, the residency training program was changed to 4-year program as present.
